Rural health care has its own host of challenges and needs compared to most metropolitan service areas. Lakewood Health System, located in the small and rural community of Staples, Minnesota, is dealing with those challenges head on by offering a full continuum of care and a fully integrated health system.

Rural Care the Right Way

The independent health system boasts a designated critical access hospital and a central clinic in Staples surrounded by three other clinics in surrounding communities. Additionally the system has over 20 physicians in its physician group, the vast majority of which are primary practice doctors, but there are also surgeons, a rheumatologist, obstetrician, oncologist and psychiatrist.

The system has focused a significant portion of its comprehensive care in the field of senior services. Because of this Lakewood now offers a long-term care department that provides senior services and a 100-bed nursing home, plus Lakewood maintains 26 assisted living apartments, 40 senior housing units and a home care hospice service in three regional locales.
